Aitkenhead Family
Narrative The Aitkenhead lineage begins in Scotland in about 1735 when David
Aitkenhead is born. Little is known
about him, except that he married Margaret Cowieson (b1737) around 1762 and that
they had 5 children:
David Aitkenhead died in 1800 and was buried on 5 Mar 1800 in Fettercairn,
Kincardine, Scotland. John
Aitkenhead, our descendent, was a farmer at Muirton of Inglismaldie.
He married Rachel Scott on 19 Dec 1799 in Marykirk, Kincardine, Scotland
and they had 5 children, the second of which we are descended:
We can
assume that Rachel had an early demise since John remarried on 10 Oct 1818 to
Jane Warden. They subsequently had
9 more children:
As
stated above, John and Rachel’s son, David, was born in 1801 and christened on
10 Jan 1801 at Muirton of Inglismaldy in Marykirk, Kincardine, Scotland.
Census records state he was a “pauper”, an “Ag Sub”, and a
“Crofter”. David and Eliza
Officer pledged marriage on 25 Jul 1840 at Marykirk and were married on 9 Aug
1840 in Montrose, Angus, Scotland. David
and Eliza had 7 children, the youngest of which we are descended:
William
Aitkenhead, a coachman, marries Jane Campbell Bruce on 10 June 1882 in
Kincardine, Scotland. The family
moves from Kincardine to Kirken, Forfarshire (Angus), as their son, David, is
born there on 29 Oct 1883. At
the age of 31, David sets sail to Australia on the passenger ship, Geelong, and
arrives in Victoria in March 1914. After
immigrating to Victoria, David, a chauffer, resides at 34 Caroline Street in the
South Yarra. On 31 July 1918, David marries Ruby Margaret MacRae on Horresby
Street in Malvern, Victoria. Later
on in his life, David’s occupation changes to “business proprietor”.
David and Ruby subsequently had 2 children, David MacRae (b1919) and
Marjorie Bruce (b1920). Prior to his death, both David and Ruby reside on 27
Waverley Road in Chadstone, Victoria. David
dies on 27 Dec 1969 at the age of 86 years old after battling days of pneumonia. In the
following sections, we will dive into the various branches of the Aitkenhead
family tree. The Cowieson Branch
The Cowieson family branch is one of the longer branches of the Aitkenhead
tree and begins when David Cowieson marries Kathren Mitchell (b. 1699 in
Banchory-Ternan, Kincardine, c. Aug 1699 in Banchory-Ternan, Kincardine) in abt
1765. They have a daughter,
Margaret, in abt 1737. Margaret
marries David Aitkenhead in abt 1762 and dies in 1793 in Fettercairn, Kincardine,
Scotland. She was buried on 5 Jan
1793 in Fettercairn. The Scott Branch
The Scott branch becomes part of the Aitkenhead tree when goes Alexander
Scott and his wife, Janet, have a daughter, Rachel, christened on 22 Nov 1777 in
Saint Cyrus, Kincardineshire, Scotland. Rachel marries John Aitkenhead on 19 Dec
1799 in Marykirk, Kincardine, Scotland. The Officer Branch
The Officer branch of the Aitkenhead tree originates from Glenbervie,
Kincardine, Scotland. The earliest
ancestor we have today is James Officer who was born in 1714.
He had a son named William (9 Jun 1755 - aft 1795) who marries Margaret
on 15 Nov 1783. Their son, Andrew,
is born and christened on 20 May 1793. Andrew
has many professions in his lifetime, beginning, in 1814-1816,
with a job as a baker in Drumlithie, Kincardine.
During this period in his life, he marries Mary Webb and they have a
daughter, Eliza, born on 12 July 1814, and then christened 8 days later on 20
July. Unfortunate circumstances
lead to an early demise for Mary, sometime before 1824, since Andrew remarries
Margaret Fleaman on 24 Jan 1824. Later
on in his life, around 1841, Andrew becomes a weaver in Lochside, Kincardine and
then,10 years later, changes his profession again to a journeyman baker.
Andrew died on 22 Oct 1855 in Glenbervie and is buried at Rosehill
cemetery in Montrose, Angus, Scotland. Eliza marries David Aitkenhead on 25 July 1840 in Marykirk, Kincardine,
Scotland. Her profession is stated
to be a hand loom weaver of linen. She
died on 25 Jan 1883 from heart disease in Luthermuir, Marykirk, Scotland.
The Bruce Branch
The Bruce branch of the Aitkenhead tree begins not with Bruce, but with the
Orchanter family. The Orchanter
family originate from Fordoun, Kincardine, Scotland.
The earliest ancestor on this tree is James Orcherton who has a son named
Robert, christened on 1 Dec 1695 in Fordoun. Robert marries Helen Grieg on 1 Aug 1723, and they have a
son, James, christened on 30 Jan 1725.
James has a son named John, christened on 23 Jun 1738 in Arbuthnott,
Kincardine, and he marries Elspet Lamb (b. 10 Jun 1753 in Dunnottar, Kincardine,
from father John) on 14 July 1769. John
and Elspet have a daughter named Elizabeth Orchanter who was born in 1779 and
christened on 26 June 1780 in Fordoun. It is Elizabeth who marries into the Bruce family when she
marries James Bruce, a ploughman, on 9 Dec 1815 in Fordoun.
James Bruce and Elizabeth have a son named David on 13 Apr 1818 and
christened a day later on 14 April. David
grows up to become a farm servant in Laurencekirk where he marries Agnes Napier
on 18 May 1850. In the same year,
their daughter, Jane Campbell Bruce, is born.
17 years later, James’ mother, Elizabeth dies from bronchitis on 11 Feb
1867 in Fordoun. David dies on 28
Apr 1881 in Westburnside, Laurencekirk, Kincardine.
His wife, Agnes dies 8 years later in Westburnside on 14 July 1889 from
cancer of the bowels. Jane Cambell Bruce marries William Aitkenhead on 10 June 1882 in
Laurencekirk. They have a son named
David, who sails to Victoria in 1914, bringing the Aitkenhead legacy to the
shores of Australia. The MacRae Branch
The MacRae family begins in Gairloch, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland when
Murdock MacRae in born in 1772. He
marries Catherine Campbell (b 1791, Poolewe, Gairloch) in abt 1820 and they have
a son named Kenneth in 1825. Kenneth
grow up to become a fisherman and marries Margaret McKenzie on 2 Sep 1850.
Their son, Duncan Kenneth, is born on 13 Jan 1858.
Around 1885, Duncan sails to Australia to begin a new life, and becomes a
book maker in Victoria. In the same
year, he marries Louisa Ann Anstey (b 1863 in St. Kilda, Victoria to John Anstey
and Ann Born) at the Fitzroy Baptist Church on Hondell Street in Melbourne.
Louisa was employed as a deed maker when they first married.
Two years later, they have a daughter named Ruby Margaret, born in St.
Kilda on 1888. Around 1918, Duncan
changes his profession to a shoe maker and he dies
on 26 April 1925 on Hewitt Street in Camberwell, Bourke, Victoria.
He is buried in Box Hill Cemetery in Victoria.
Ruby Margaret marries David Aitkenhead on 31 July 1918 in Malvern, Victoria.
They have 2 children: David
MacRae (b 1919) and Marjorie Bruce (b 31 July 1920).
Ruby dies in 1971 in Chad, Victoria. Marjorie Bruce Aitkenhead marries Victor Douglas Batson which unites the two
family trees together. ANSTEY
Sub-Branch The Anstey family becomes part of the Aitkenhead tree when Louisa Ann Anstey
marries Duncan MacRae in 1886. Their
daughter, Ruby Margaret, marries David Aitkenhead.
This section details the history of the Anstey family. The Anstey family begins with George Anstey, a farmer, who has a son named
John in 1815 in Chumleigh, Devon, England.
In 1848, John marries Ann Born (b. 17 Mar 1822, Chumleigh to parents John
and Mary Ford). John and Ann, with
their eldest child, Mary Jane (b 1852) immigrated to Victoria, Australia in June
1854. After arriving, John becomes
a carpenter and the two have 4 more children, Alfred (d. bef 1871), Robert
Edward (b. 1857), Louisa Ann (b. 1863, St. Kilda), and George (d. bef 1871).
